Eggoff

March 4, 2022

A friend of mine hosted a little cooking competition.

The only rule was the dish had to be egg-centric/egg-forward. I won; the process was just everyone voting for their favorite and mine was decidedly the most elaborate one. I made a rolled omelette with dashi, soy sauce, and sheets of nori between some layers.

It got me thinking of the judging criteria and if we should have laid out ground rules beforehand. Certainly, mine was the most elaborate, but a friend’s soft scramble over toast was probably much more well-executed. I also thought it might be better simply discuss the strengths of each than choose a sole winner.

In some unsorted weighting would probably be taste, execution, presentation, and creativity. For competitions that also highlight a specific ingredient making sure it comes through probably should also be important criteria.
